Minnesota Opera Visitors Guide - Opera in Minneapolis, Minnesota
The Minnesota Opera has delighted opera-lovers with its productions of traditional and contemporary operas since 1963. One of the 16 largest opera companies in the U.S., opera in Minnesota has attracted such guest artists as Sherrill Milnes, Denyce Graves, Daniel Massey and Richard Bonynge. In recent years, its performances have included The Magic Flute, Norma, The Flying Dutchman, Lucia di Lammermoor, Der Rosenkavalier and Madame Butterfly. Each of the Minnesota Opera's seasons features one opera from the bel canto repertoire. The Minnesota Opera Company is also known for premiering a number of works, such as Mayer’s A Death in the Family and Maurice Sendak’s Where the Wild Things Are. The Grapes of Wrath, with music by composer Ricky Ian Gordon — is yet another commission.
Although the Opera in Minnesota makes its home at The Minnesota Opera Center, the company schedules its performances at the Ordway Center for the Performing Arts, located in downtown St. Paul. Artistic director of the Minnesota Opera is Dale Johnson.
